Rope Options for Diameter and Color

3/8" Double Braid Polyester

A lighter weight and thinner rope than the 1/2" - great for those really long lines (25', 30'+) where the thicker ropes would be too heavy.  Also nice for "get-down" ropes.  Available in black only.

Options for Length

The most common lengths for groundwork training are 12’ or 14’.  The "standard" long line is 22’.  I usually have those lengths available at fairs or events.  8 - 9' is a good length for a rope that will be used mainly for leading/tying.  I can make lead ropes in any length (6' minimum for splicing requirements) so you can order exactly what you want.   I measure the lead rope from end to end of the rope.  The snap (if any) is included in the length, the leather popper is not included in the length.  I cannot guarantee the lead rope will be exactly a certain length but it will be within 1 - 2".  I generally err on the side of being a little long rather than too short.

Step 2:  Choose the type of halter end that you want.

I now carry a replacement trigger bull snap - if you have a lead rope with a broken snap.Click here for details.

Snap: When attached on the halter end of a lead rope, a snap makes for a quick connection.   The choice of snap is a personal preference and I carry a variety of snaps for that reason.  I have them grouped into categories as to size, cost, etc. in the sections below.  I do not guarantee any hardware against breakage.  In fact, since the rope is very unlikely to break, it is advantageous that the snap can provide a weak link so it will break in a bad situation and hopefully avoid injury to your horse.  For more details on the snaps, go to  About the Hardware

Basic Button:  This option has a button knot of braided polyester lacing cord on the end. Attach to your halter by tying a sheet bend knot around the halter loops – the same knot you use to tie on your halter. Although it is not quite as secure as the eye splice, it is a faster, non-metal way to attach your lead rope.  The button makes a stopper and will keep the rope from slipping through the knot.

The standard button end will be braided with one color.  Since it is a tripled knot,  3 colors are possible but I would recommend using 1 or 2 colors - those buttons are more secure and are better for the heavy duty use a lead rope gets.

Other options are available that would be suitable for lighter duty lead ropes.

Smaller size buttons are used on 1/4" and 3/8" rope.

10' lead in 5/8" rope:

    10 x $1.35                       13.50
Brass bolt snap (Opt 2)   14.00
    Plain Tail End                    5.00
                                         $ 32.50

Custom End:  This would include buttons, knots and tassels, etc.  Click here for Custom Options.

1/4"Double Braid Polyster

Used for long "Feather Weight Lines" or "get-down" ropes.  Available in the colors shown below.

Eye Splice:  Attaches to the halter without a snap. It makes a connection that is 100% guaranteed not to come undone but the lead can be easily removed when you want. You do have to pull the whole length of the lead rope through the halter loops, though, so this option is best if you plan to keep your halter and lead together most of the time.

Lead Ropes and Long Lines made with Double Braid Polyester rope are excellent training tools. Double braid rope is constructed with a braided cover over a separate braided core – a rope inside of a rope. This gives it a special "feel" and makes it heavier than regular rope so it communicates your cues better. This construction also allows for eye splicing - so snaps can be more securely attached instead of using rope clamps. It also allows for back splicing – so ends can be neatly finished instead of simply melting the rope.

All my lead ropes are made with Artcraft Braid rope.  It is manufactured in the USA and is designed specifically for the equine industry.  It is excellent rope!

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you,

Leather Popper:  This is the standard option on my lead ropes.  Unless another option is chosen, all lead ropes will have a leather popper on the tail end (latigo leather in black or burgundy ~ lace leather in brown). I make a small eye splice in the rope and attach the popper with a double heart braid. That way the rope fibers are not damaged by pulling the popper through the end and you can easily replace the popper if it gets chewed off or torn.  The eye splice also adds weight to the end of your rope, making it easier to twirl and throw.

Poppers on 1/4" rope are 3/8" wide; 1/2" wide on all other rope.

Replacement poppers are $3.00 for 1/2"; $2.00 for 3/8"

Click here for more details  About the Leather.

Scissor Snap - Nickel Plated, Brass or Stainless Steel (Option 3SS Snap

  • The opening on the scissor snaps does fit on both loops of a rope halter made with 1/4" double braid or halter cord.  Halters made with larger diameter rope or cord are a little too thick for the snap to close completely.
  • permanent splice needed for 1/2" rope, either method for 3/8" or 1/4" rope
  • recommend using stainless steel for permanent splice - will never rust and is sturdier

Removable:  You can have your snap attached with an eye spliced loop (blue and purple rope in picture).  This way you can easily remove the snap if you decide not to use it, switch to a different snap, or replace it if it ever breaks.  This creates a bit of a lump (which will become smaller with use) but in my opinion, the advantages it provides outweigh the bulkiness of the connection.
Permanent:  I can attach your choice of snap directly into the rope when I make the splice (brown and black rope in picture).  This makes for a slimmer profile but if the snap breaks, your lead rope will need a major repair.

I have to permanently splice in the stainless steel trigger bull snap on 5/8" rope because it has a smaller ring at the base.

There is no difference in price between a removable or permanent snap attachment. Just tell me which option you want.

1/2" Double Braid Polyester

This is generally the standard diameter in the horse industry.  All my trainers use the 1/2" rope for their lead ropes.  A great weight and feel for training - substantial enough to be easy to hold onto but not too heavy even for the longer lines.  Also nice for shorter ropes used mainly for leading/tying or as a "get down rope".  It will remain flexible and easy to tie even after years of use.  Available in the colors shown below.

Plain End:  This is a nice finished end (I make a back splice) that adds a little weight and is a good option for shorter lead ropes that will be used mainly for leading and tying.  If you don't need the leather popper - why pay for it?

Go to About the Rope for information on splices

Below are a few of the custom lead ropes I have made.  If you have an idea for something that you haven't seen on my website or elsewhere, let me know what it is and I can probably make it for you.

Medium Bolt Snap - Nickel Plated or Brass (base ring sizes: 1" left or 3/4" right)

  • The opening of the medium bolt snaps is not large enough to fit around both loops of a rope halter easily but works fine with metal rings

  • choose 3/4" base ring for attaching 1/2" rope with permanent splice

5/8" Double Braid Polyester

A heavier weight and thicker rope than the 1/2".  For those who like a more substantial rope to hold onto, but I would not recommend it for longer lines.  In my opinion, it would be too heavy for a lead rope longer than 15 - 16'.
